The Tavole di San Giuseppe in Minervino di Lecce: a unique tradition in the heart of Salento
On the eve and the day of Saint Joseph, a rare event deeply rooted in the history of Salento transforms Minervino di Lecce into a true stage of tradition: the Tavole di San Giuseppe.
I had the chance to experience it from the inside, wandering the village’s illuminated streets, entering homes where the tables are set with almost sacred care, and tasting the flavors that make this celebration a moment out of time.

Minervino di Lecce: a village that transforms
Because between Otranto and Santa Cesarea Terme, Minervino di Lecce is an often-overlooked gem of southern Apulia, a seemingly peaceful village that, on March 18 and 19, comes alive with exceptional fervor.
The locals uphold an ancient ritual: setting large tables in honor of San Giuseppe, patron of carpenters and protector of families. These tables, covered with symbolic dishes, are not just a feast—they are an offering, a gesture of gratitude and sharing that dates back several centuries.

A table full of traditional flavors
Each food has a deep meaning:
🍞 The loaf at the center of the table represents abundance and blessing.
🍲 Pasta and chickpeas, served without cheese, symbolize the humility and frugality of rural life.
🌿 Wild vegetables evoke simplicity and a connection to the land.
🥄 Pittule (small fried dough balls) signify generosity.
But what amazed me most were the traditional pastries found only at this time of year:
🍩 Zeppole di San Giuseppe, irresistible fried or baked cream-filled pastries topped with amarena cherries.
🥜 Mustaccioli, biscuits flavored with cooked wine and covered in chocolate.
🍯 Cartellate, thin spirals of dough dipped in honey or vincotto, their shape reminiscent of a crown of thorns.
In every home, sweet aromas mingle with the scent of freshly baked bread and simmering dishes.

A journey into authenticity
What makes this festival so special is not just the food, but the atmosphere. Imagine wide-open doors, families warmly welcoming strangers, and a constant flow of people in the streets where curious visitors mingle with locals proud to pass on their heritage.
On the evening of March 18, the Tavola Itinerante allows visitors to move from house to house, discovering these tables as small living altars where spirituality meets conviviality. Then, on March 19, the village gathers for the central moment: the blessing of the tables and the sharing of meals with guests, a powerful gesture of solidarity.
