Thank you for visiting my blog. As a thank you, receive a free guide to Puglia, a PDF full of ideas, places I love, and stories from the South.

The Puglia region, with its fine sandy beaches, rocky coasts, picturesque villages, and rich cultural heritage, is a destination to discover or rediscover all year round.

But what is the best season?

As a resident of Lecce, I have noticed through interactions with my clients at Lady Papavero (creating jewelry using the ancient art of Lecce papier-mâché) that each season offers a unique experience. Whether it’s enjoying lively summer festivals or the last autumn swims on almost deserted beaches, every time of year has something to offer.

In this article, I share ideas and travel tips to make the most of your stay in this beautiful region.

When and why to plan a trip to Puglia?

Spring (March–May): The Season of Flowers and Tranquility

Why choose spring?

Spring is undoubtedly one of the best times to explore Puglia if you want to escape the suffocating summer heat and tourist crowds. However, evenings in March and April can still be a little cool.

Pleasant temperatures: Between 15°C and 22°C, the mild weather is perfect for exploring the region on foot or by bike.

Flowering landscapes: The countryside is never as beautiful as in spring in Puglia, dotted everywhere with wildflowers.

Fewer tourists: Sites like the trulli of Alberobello or historic cities such as Lecce and Ostuni are much quieter, offering a unique chance to enjoy them in peace.

Traditional celebrations: Take advantage of Easter celebrations, particularly in Taranto and Gallipoli, where you can witness the processions.

“In April, I had the chance to wander the deserted streets of Ostuni. The city, usually lively in summer, was peaceful, almost suspended in time,” says Anna, a photography enthusiast and client of Lady Papavero in Lecce.

Summer (June–August): Sun, Beaches, and Traditional Festivities

Why choose summer?

Summer is the busiest season in Puglia. If you love warmth and a festive atmosphere, it’s the perfect time to visit.

Beaches and coves: Enjoy the beaches of Salento, such as Porto Cesareo and Torre Lapillo, true gems with turquoise water and white sand. For rocky coasts, explore places like Porto Selvaggio.

Festive atmosphere: In the evenings, these natural spaces with sea views turn into lively party spots until late at night. Almost every village celebrates a local saint, also offering a chance to taste regional specialties.

Sunny weather: With temperatures between 30°C and 35°C, it’s the ideal time to enjoy the sun and the sea.

Enjoy the sea: Don’t hesitate to rent a boat and discover Puglia from the water.

Attend local festivals: You can participate in the famous Notte della Taranta, a festival of traditional music and dance in Salento, or listen to open-air operas in Martina Franca (Itria Valley festival).

Dinner under the stars and tasting local specialties: I have an extraordinary memory of the small port of Polignano a Mare, which at dusk becomes a welcoming place to enjoy a grilled octopus sandwich right before your eyes, accompanied by a cold beer.

“In August, I danced until dawn at the Notte della Taranta. The atmosphere was incredible, with traditional music filling the streets. It was an unforgettable experience,” says Lorenzo, a client of Lady Papavero, after his summer in Salento.

Autumn (September–November): The Harvest Season and the Sweetness of Life

Why choose autumn?

Autumn is an ideal time to visit Puglia. The temperatures are mild, and you can enjoy swims in a sea that is still warm, away from the summer crowds.

Moderate temperatures: In September, temperatures hover around 25°C, perfect for outdoor activities. However, be mindful of the time change, as the days will be shorter.

Almost deserted beaches: Enjoy nearly empty beaches and a still-warm sea in magnificent landscapes.

Fewer tourists: You can explore historic towns without the summer crowds, an excellent opportunity to discover Lecce, Alberobello, or Bari in complete peace.

Explore historic towns: Take advantage of autumn to stroll the streets of historic cities like Lecce or Bari, without the crowds.

Cooking workshops: Learn to prepare local specialties such as orecchiette alla cima di rapa tops during cooking classes at the masserie.

“During my October trip, I participated in the grape harvest at a masseria and visited Lady Papavero in Lecce. It was a memorable experience,” says Laura, a local culture enthusiast.

Winter (December–February): An Authentic and Intimate Experience

Why choose winter?

In winter, Puglia offers an intimate atmosphere, still-mild daytime temperatures, and Christmas festivities if you are lucky enough to visit in December.

Peaceful atmosphere: Towns like Alberobello or Polignano a Mare are almost deserted, providing an intimate and authentic experience.

Mild climate: Temperatures between 10°C and 15°C are pleasant for walking without summer crowds. However, some evenings may be damp and cool.

Christmas: If you visit Puglia in December, you will discover the full magic of Christmas. Most villages are decorated, and everywhere you will find nativity scenes: some live, others made of papier-mâché (according to Lecce’s ancient tradition).

What to do in winter?

Discover cultural heritage: Take advantage of winter’s tranquility to visit churches such as the Basilica of Santa Croce in Lecce or the magnificent Basilica of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria in Galatina.

Enjoy thermal springs: Treat yourself to a wellness break at the Santa Cesarea thermal baths, renowned for their warm, mineral-rich waters.

Explore the Castellana Caves: The caves, rarely visited in winter, offer an almost mystical experience in the quiet depths.

“During my December trip, I discovered a Lecce I barely recognized, calm and beautifully illuminated for the holidays,” says Matteo, a local resident.

Whether you are seeking the serenity of spring, the festive energy of summer, the welcoming warmth of autumn, or the intimate atmosphere of winter, Puglia will enchant you all year round. From sunny beaches to Christmas markets, from the grape harvest to traditional festivals, every moment is perfect to discover the beauty and cultural richness of Puglia.
