While the trulli of Alberobello, the spectacular cliffs of Polignano a Mare, and the Baroque palaces of Lecce are must-see attractions, the region also hides other treasures far from the beaten track. Here are five little-known places steeped in history and serenity that are definitely worth discovering!
Shrine of Our Lady of Coelimanna in Supersano (Salento)
The elders say that a miracle took place here… Lost in the countryside of Supersano, this small, little-visited sanctuary is one of those places where time seems to stand still. Its sober exterior contrasts with an interior decorated with delicate frescoes, faded by time, bearing witness to the region’s rich religious past.
Papaveroshop tip: Go there in the late afternoon to admire the golden hues of the setting sun over the surrounding olive groves.

Monumental Cemetery of Lecce – Church of San Niccolò e Cataldo (Salento)
A testament to Puglia’s Norman past, the Church of San Niccolò e Cataldo, founded in the 12th century by Tancred of Sicily, contrasts with Lecce’s Baroque architecture. Despite its architectural and historical richness, it is too often overlooked by tourists. Located at the entrance to Lecce’s monumental cemetery, it stands alongside sculpted tombs and family chapels that tell the story of the city’s great families.
Papaveroshop tip: To visit the interior, contact the FAI delegation in Lecce, which organizes tours on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Rock church of San Biagio in San Vito dei Normanni (near the Itria Valley)
Carved out of the rock, this Byzantine church is a forgotten masterpiece. The medieval frescoes, still visible despite the passing centuries, tell stories of saints and pilgrims. Far from the tourist trails, this place offers a mystical atmosphere, accentuated by the damp walls and the smell of ancient stone.

San Michele delle Grotte in Cagnano Varano (Gargano)
Imagine a nave carved out of rock! Unlike large basilicas, here everything is raw and authentic. Overshadowed by the famous sanctuary of Monte Sant’Angelo, the troglodyte church of San Michele delle Grotte is nevertheless worth a visit. A unique spiritual experience in a striking natural setting.
Papaveroshop tip: If you have the opportunity, attend a mass there—the acoustics are breathtaking.

Swimming in Torre Guaceto (Salento)
The beaches of Puglia are magnificent, but some are overcrowded in summer. For a wilder experience, head to the beach at the Torre Guaceto nature reserve. Here, there are no tourist facilities, no deckchairs, and no loud music. Accessible only on foot or by bike, this beach with its crystal-clear waters is perfect for snorkeling, thanks to its exceptional marine biodiversity.
Papaveroshop tip: Bring water and a snack, as there are no facilities on site.
